Used cooking oil gets new use as biofuel
Heather Hardcastle likes to think green. So does Royal Caribbean Cruises. So when Heather approached the company about recycling its used cooking oil, the response was positive. Together the Juneau fisherwoman and the cruise line worked out a protocol with the Coast Guard that resulted in the collection of about 6,000 gallons of used cooking oil last season.

Alaska Loses 140,000 Passengers
This is the year that will bring the full effect of the cruise lines’ reaction to Alaska’s head tax and other measures voted in as law two years ago by ballot. As a result, the state will see a 14.2 percent drop in cruise capacity — 140,000 fewer cruise passengers. And the reductions aren’t over yet.

Group forms to support industry
A group of Alaskans has formed a statewide, non-profit organization called Alaska Alliance for Cruise Travel (AlaskaACT) to promote accurate information and support responsible development and growth of Alaska’s tourism and the cruise industry.
