Bed tax way up in Fairbanks

Bradners Economic Report

Interior travel: Fairbanks North Star Borough hotel and motel “bed tax” receipts were up sharply, at 14.4 percent over the first quarter of 2014. Tax collections were $8.2 million compared with $7.17 million in the quarter of 2013. Hotel and motel bed tax are a prime indicator of visitor traffic, and in the winter quarter it would be mainly business-released. Passenger traffic is the Alaska Railroad’s bright spot, up 17.9 percent in 2013 over 2012 to 489,682, and in 2014 expected to exceed 500,000 passengers. That puts railroad ridership back to levels prior to the Great Recession in 2009.
